Mark Thackery(Sidney Poitier, numa interpretação magistral) é um jovem engenheiro, negro e desempregado, que vai dar aulas em Londres, no bairro operário de East End, nos anos 60. Liderados por Denham (Christian Roberts), Pamela (Judy Geeson) e Barbara (Lulu, que também canta a canção título), os alunos, desordeiros e indisciplinados, estão determinados a destruir Thackeray como fizeram com seu antecessor.Thackeray, porém, está acostumado a hostilidades e enfrenta o desafio, tratando os alunos como jovens adultos que logo serão responsáveis por suas próprias vidas. Ao receber um convite para voltar à engenharia, Thackeray deve decidir se pretende continuar. Com Judy Geeson, Christian Roberts, Suzy Kendall, Lulu, e direção de James Clavell.
